My MUET Journey: From Band 3.5 to Band 5

MUET (Malaysian University English Test) has been a roller coaster journey for me. When I first sat for MUET, I received a Band 3.5. While some might feel satisfied with that, deep down, I knew I could do better. My target has always been Band 5, and this journey is still ongoing.

The Starting Point: Band 3.5

I still remember the mixed feelings when I first saw my results. 3.5 wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t what I aimed for either. It made me realize that MUET isn’t just about knowing English—it’s about mastering the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in an exam setting.

I told myself that this result wasn’t the end; it was just a checkpoint. From that moment, I decided to take MUET more seriously, reflect on my weaknesses, and polish my strengths.

The Easiest Part: Reading

Throughout my preparation, I found the reading component the easiest. Maybe it’s because I’ve always enjoyed reading articles, novels, and online content. The questions, although tricky at times, felt more straightforward compared to other sections. I learned to manage my time wisely, skim and scan effectively, and most importantly, understand the context of the passages quickly.

Reading became my comfort zone. It boosted my confidence, especially when I scored quite well in practice tests. But of course, I couldn’t let my comfort zone make me ignore my weaker areas.

The Hardest Part: Writing

If I had to name the most challenging part of MUET, without hesitation, I would say writing. It’s not just about writing grammatically correct sentences; it’s about presenting ideas clearly, organizing them properly, and fulfilling the task requirements under time pressure.

Task 2, the essay, was especially intimidating. Sometimes my ideas would jumble up, and I’d run out of time to proofread. There were times I even questioned if I was capable of writing a proper academic essay. But I learned that improvement comes from practice, feedback, and patience.

The Road Ahead

Now, I’m still chasing my goal: Band 5. I know it won’t be easy, but I also know that it’s not impossible. Every mock test, every essay I write, every listening practice I do—these are all steps closer to my target.

MUET has taught me more than English; it has taught me about resilience, persistence, and self-reflection.

To anyone on the same journey: don’t give up. Embrace your weaknesses, sharpen your strengths, and keep pushing forward. Our English journey doesn’t stop at MUET—it’s a lifelong process.
